You must wait one year if you want to get a puppy of the sex and the colour you wish, tattooed and owning the health certificate. Being a primitive dog, it goes on heat just once a year (November-December), pups after about two months and needs 2-3 months for weaning, vaccinations, registration files, tattoo and so on..
The value on the market goes from 520 Euro to 2100 Euro according to the different characteristics. Unfortunately you can find very cheap Basenjis but you run a lot of risks: illnesses as vaccinations were not made, ill-treatments and a bad nourishment, impossibility of getting valid documents in Italy, false documents, lack of pedigree, unsettled personality (asociality, aggressiveness). If it is possible before buy the puppy ask the owner to see the 2 parents. Expensive basenji not mean quality basenji.
We advise to buy, if possible, young exemplars: the social character of Basenji develops in the first six months after the weaning; an adult dog will have a lot of difficulties in its insertion, it will be shy and difficult to be treated, above all in this breed. But don’t worry: we know cases of persons who bought one/two-year old Basenjis and could insert them within their family without any problems: the secrets are sweetness, love and respect - things required by these friends.
These friends of ours cannot be compared to other dogs, but to children; if you can treat them properly, they will follow your orders. But their dispositions are wild: don’t think that a Basenji, like all the other dogs, brings you your slippers; you will find in a Basenji a friend able to greet you with joy when you arrive home.
Our Basenjis live in the garden, in the open air and sleep within a bed in a sheltered area. Even in the coldest days I have seen Bilal and Lupin run and play in the garden showing indifference to the coldness. We know that these friends are common in Canada, Finnland, Belgium, Northern United States: places that are colder than Italy.
It can for its cleanliness and its silence. But it must not stay at home in order not to feel cold. I have noticed that Basenjis living in a flat have a fine hair, while those living in the open air have a thicker one.
