BREED'S CHARACTERISTICS
Basenji is a special dog, it is hard to describe sensations of live together with this old breed.
It is a sweet, silent dog, for it silky hair it is very plesant to caress .
It is indipendet but it is a "pack dog" and for some character aspect it seem a cat.
Here a little list of the principal characteritics.
It is fondamental, before thinking to take a basenji, to meet someone directly, to talk with someone who just have basenji.
SIZE, WEIGHT: rom 40 to 43 cm; up to 12 Kilos.
HAIR AND COLOUR: short and silklike, with white spots; the extremity of the tail is white: red. You can find also black/white and tricolor. subjects. For a short time also the streaked coat : brindle has been being introduced in Europe shows dog.
APPEARANCE: springy step, forehead wrinkling when the dog has curiosity or interest for something, small and erect ears, eyes that seem to be made up with mascara, tail rolled up like a ring on the back. The resemblance between these dogs and those drawn by the ancient Egiptians is remarkable.
SUITED FOR: those who love particular things and appreciate an intelligent and very clean dog.
NOT SUITED FOR: those who prefer being unobserved and cannot look after it. For those who want an obedient dog, able to bring them slippers.
NEEDS: they need space, movement and company; they love lyng in the sun, they hate staying alone.
CARES: this cleanest and health fanatic breed does not demand particular cares. They must be vaccinated like all the other breeds.
CHARACTERISTICS: it is the ideal dog for home if you live in a big flat: it does not stink, it cleans itself like a cat, it does not bark like all the other dogs; it makes strange, funny and original noises. It is usually very silent and makes the noises only in special moments. It is very cheerful and friendly.
DISPOSITIONS OF THE BREED: intelligent, sociable, tender, communicative. It is not always obedient.
FAULTS: it knows what to do if it wants to be considered and not by obstinacy but by kindness.. It does not bear to be alone and can revenge itself.
TYPICAL ILLNESSES: those shared by all the dogs. This breed can have problems deriving from consanguinity because of the reduced number of progenitors. You must pay particular attention to the origins of the dogs (pedigree) and to its place of origin.
TIME OF LIFE: about 12 years.
DAILY ALIMENTARY NEEDS: 740 calories for a dog weighing 10 Kilos. It eats everything, less than dogs belonging to different breeds but having the same size. Basenji can eat little sparrows, blackbirds, lizards and whatever he wishes. He can crack every kind of bones, also chicken’s and rabbit’s.
